Sky Lounge at the Linden Suites

If you're looking for a venue for an intimate gathering (maybe for about 20 people or so), check out the Sky Lounge of the Linden Suites in Ortigas, Manila. It's located at the Roof Deck (28th floor).

The buffet table can be set up in the hallway, like they did at the Unilab Mommy's Day Out event I attended.

Catering by Linden is just great. I heard their lasagna was really good but since I don't eat lasagna, 'd just have to take their word for it. But the presentation was nice and the waitstaff really attentive and handy.

The food is enough to make you forget your ipods for a while and even stop you from using your Blackberries. Then again, you might just find it hard not to tweet pics of the food or rave about them.

The venue has enough space for a multi media projector and your laptop for presentations as well as enough sockets for other gadgets (like your iPad or media player, should you need to use or charge those).

So contact Linden Suites now for your booking requirements.

Aquaknox Restaurant

Aquaknox Restaurant is located at San Lorenzo Village in Makati, very near Don Bosco Church Makati (2 restaurants away) and also quite near Makati Cinema Square (Plaza Fair). The ambience was cozy and was the perfect venue for Johnson & Johnson's Bedtime Believer Awards (in collaboration with Nuffnang).

I was not in the mood to really take pictures so I can only offer a shot of the lunch I ate (and I have since forgotten the name of the dish). But it was nice. Their sandwiches were also good and the waitstaff was attentive and thorough.

I highly recommend the place for similar small events (well, it can actually accommodate up to a hundred people, but the place is a split-level type so some would have to sit upstairs) and gatherings.

Employ Comment Moderation

Whether in Blogger or Wordpress, make sure to employ comment moderation for all your posts, not just the recent ones.

You see, people are actually hiring other people to leave links on blog posts. Some may even be posting scripts that could basically 'steal' away your traffic. Don't let them ride on your blog's popularity... or at least, don't let their links fool your few visitors into getting who-knows-what when they click on a link. These comments become part of your blog's pages so make sure you have total control over every link there is on your site.

Mike Defensor Forum with Bloggers

Let me start by putting some things in context first.

I am from Manila, not Quezon City.

I did not register to vote this year, and have actually stopped voting since I got married (so that's at least two elections I missed already).

I have no real politics and am fairly ambivalent about our leaders.

I am not saying 'go vote for Mike Defensor' nor am I saying 'don't vote for Mike Defensor.'

I went to this blogger event mostly to hang out with my friend, who helped organize it. I had no expectations, no real preconceived notions, no agenda.

*~*

The blogger event was held at Mike Defensor's home in La Vista Subdivision in Katipunan. He/they even alloted drivers to fetch some of the bloggers at Petron, outside the village, and bring them to the house.

The event was scheduled to start at 5 PM but of course, people only started coming around that time. Mike's gracious wife welcomed everyone and directed them to the lanai, which was set up for 40 people or so. Catering was by Henry's Catering Service (highly-recommended for the great waitstaff and good food).

*~*

Highlights of what Mike Defensor said during the forum, and his answers to questions thrown at him:

1) Sonny Belmonte has, during his three terms (I think), increased Quezon City's budget to P10B (with an expected P2-4B more, making it P14B) for this year

2) Quezon City is now the leading city in the country and still has much potential for growth

3) Potential for growth stems from nature parks (Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife and Lamesa Eco Park); number of schools in the area; land area still available for development, business center in the Trinoma area; and the entertainment industry

4) Has many businesses, at least three were mining-related, one environment-related, one housing-related, and a mineral water business with Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino (hehe, they should go into the rv repair business too, seeing as more and more stars are getting RVs and private buses)... he estimates his net worth at P30M

5) Asked what he will ask election opponent Herbert Bautista, he said he will ask him to explain the almost P100M food expense the Vice Mayor's office has incurred in the last three years, given that the Vice Mayor's office only has P300M allotment per year...

6) Mike Defensor apologized if people think that his service to the present administration helped the government they hate, but hopes that people will at least be fair and consider his achievements as councilor, congressman, and cabinet member

7) He claimed to have no record of graft and corruption

8) He at least has been living in QC for many years and claims to still paying off loans for their lovely home in La Vista

9) Believes the RH Bill shouldn't have been adopted in QC because the high population growth in QC is due to informal settlers brought there by squatting syndicates, not due to actual baby boom among QC residents

10) Also said that the RH Bill should be a matter of national policy and not something chosen to be adopted or not by whichever city

11) Asked how he intends to address the perception that he is PGMA's pup, he responded by detailing achievements (e.g. 41 steps for Pag-Ibig Loans was reduced to 7)

12) Agenda in a sentence: UPLIFTING THE LIVES OF PEOPLE IN QUEZON CITY

13) Asked why he stuck it out with PGMA, he first stated the fact that no President left a Presidency in high favor (hubs kidded Magsaysay, who died in a plane crash). He said he joined PGMA when her ratings were high and saw no real reason to just up and leave. He also said that he isn't like other politicians who immediately jump ship just because something is going wrong. He did leave the LIBERAL PARTY because they weren't united anymore in what they want.

14) He is now supporting Villar's bid for the Presidency, believing he is the kind of President we need right now. His running mate is Aiko Melendez (who is running against Ara Mina)

15) Asked why run against Herbert if he believes Sonny Belmonte did a good job, he said he still feels that despite the growth, there are still these other things that need improvement and he believes he can lead QC and deliver those improvements.

IF ELECTED, HE INTENDS TO:
a) Use P1.5B of the QC budget to address three things: more scholarships to OSY with no grade requirement (as long as it's passing); QC Medical card for QC residents like the one enjoyed by Makati residents; and more perks/benefits/discounts for QC senior citizens and disabled citizens

b) Phase out the use of two-stroke tricycle engines (?) for tricycles and clean out creeks as part of his first executive agenda

c) Work closely with local NGOs to provide awareness campaigns, expert support and alternative livelihood to commercial sex workers to address growing HIV/AIDS concern in the country (given that there are about 60 colleges and many BPOs in QC where adolescents are engaged in risky sexual behavior)

d) Convert Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife into a night park like the Night Safari Park in Singapore; develop business district around Trinoma; create a celebrity hub like Hollywood in QC; change the penalties to drivers/petty criminals so that their families won't get penalized as well

e) Focus on projects that promote a sustainable environment

f) Focus on putting the youth back into school as a strategy to reduce crime and drug use and make QC more sustainbale

g) Make SPED more accessible to communities by integrating them with existing schools (at least, one SPED school per district)

h) Continue streetsweeping for small-time and big-time drug pushers

*~*

To be honest, I was impressed with Mike Defensor's ability to answer questions. He may have given safe answers sometimes but there was no beating around the bush only to not have a point. He had specific plans which he would iterate one by one. He had justifications. And though there was a point in the forum when he was relating hush-hush stories, he did not spend the two hours in front badmouthing other people. Most of the session were spent on actual issues. He really talked about his plans.

He only balked a little twice:
1) When asked what his specific net worth was (for purposes of comparison to what it would be someday), he had a guarded expression. But I don't take that against him... even the common folk don't like saying how much they earn or how much they got paid anyway.

2) When I asked him about his take on restorative justice and if it was part of his agenda to complement the work the DSWD does and invest on conversion programs for children in conflict with the law (CICL). He was honest about not knowing much about R.A. 9344 but said he intends to strengthen existing youth centers like the one in Molave... and also connected that with his free education agenda. He also later approached me about being interested in what I do (with FAD Inc. and the Rotary Club of Chinatown-Manila) for restorative justice. He gave me his number and I also told him I would contact him about breastfeeding training for his plans of free prenatal care and child delivery for QC residents.

Politics aside, I loved their home. It was huge but it was more spacious than opulent. It was a modern Filipino home. And I also appreciated that though they exerted a lot of effort for our comfort, there was no grand display of generosity.

*~*

Aside from the press kit, we did get a 2 gb thumb drive. I also have a button bearing my name and blog! Just so I am transparent as well.

*~*

To be fair as well, they did include photocopies of proofs of Herbert Bautista's questionable spending in the press kit. I wish though that they scanned the pages instead and just saved it in the thumb drives. At least we could easily share it with online friends.

*~*

Also a fact. Despite the improvements Mike Defensor has made with PNR, they were still unable to pay their debts to PPA. I checked with former colleagues.

*~*

He will never be my Mayor and I am still on the fence about him as a politician, but if he can help me further my advocacies, then I intend to work with him.

Now, I hope this helps others who are voting this May. If he's just lying, then it's between him and the people of QC.

Don't Max Out Your Paypal

Leave some dollars in your Paypal account.

I know that most people have probably already spent their bonuses and are considering withdrawing the remainder of their Paypal earnings. And I am here to remind those people not to empty their accounts because chaces are, subscription payments to online galleries and domain and hosting will be coming up soon. After all, we usually open such accounts after coming into money so we really wouldn't do well to be without in our Paypal accounts (one of the safest ways to transact online) when that day comes. Plus, paying early after getting the expiration notice might just get you discounts or free online backup. Those are little things that are worth paying early for.

If you must, just withdraw what you really need to tide you over, even if it means not saving $5 transaction fee. And get creative and resourceful with your other resources. There may be things you can reuse as gifts, after all.

Blogging for Money

Blogging has become a very lucrative income-generating possibility. And the competition has become quite cutthroat. So if one is just starting out, what things should he be looking into?

1) Blog Content. Will this be a niche blog? If so, what do you know? What are you passionate about and are resources available to you? Do you have the luxury of time and inspiration to update regularly?

2) Blog Hosting. There was a time, free blogspot blogs can earn hundreds of dollars. But now, even if you're only starting out, you may have to invest in your own domain and WP hosting. And yes, you have to learn basic HTML at least.

3) Promotion. You can regularly leave links in your Facebook, Multiply, Plurk accounts to links to your posts. You can appeal to friends to visit your blog. You can join blogrolls and blog trains. You can leave links in message boards. But you may also have to employ the use of an seo software once your blog is up to boost traffic to your site. All these will take time and/or money.

So yeah, it's not that easy anymore. There are gregarious bloggers with no content really but have mastered SEO that they earn well from paid links and ads. But sacrifice content and your blogging boom will be just that, a boom that will dissipate in time. So what you want is to walk the middle ground. You surely don't want to be investing time and money on something that will not produce results for you long-term :)

Fish & Co.

A friend was chosen for the Yehey and Fish & Co. Plating Event for Bloggers last Thursday. Unfortunately, she had to back out at the last minute and referred me instead. So I found myself with 19 other bloggers at Fish & Co. at Shangri-la Mall.

Turned out, some of them were bloggers I met at the spa event a month ago. One is a Berks friend and another was a N@Wie Mom. But the best thing was being teamed up with competitive go-getters who made the contest really challenging and fun.

We were split in four teams, representing fish fillet dish flavors that the restaurant offers: Malaysia, India, Japan and Philadelphia. I was part of Team Philadelphia of the blue sash and travel/dining teammates.

We were given P500 each and a list of ingredients to buy. I forget now if we were given 15 or 30 minutes to shop. The first team to get back to the resto was given prizes (we were first!) but the real task was to plate fish and chips according to the country of inspiration.

Melo, a sef-proclaimed foodie and OC plater (is there such a word?) took charge. We asked for a basket and proceeded to just surround the fish and fries with the healthy veggies and colorful cheese we bought. We were the first to finish plating as well. We called ours Philly Fish Steak, inspired by the Philly Cheese steak ingredients of cheese, onions, lettuce and tomatoes.

The Other groups were just as inspired and prepared. Unfortunately for them, the judges decided that ours was still the best! Maybe because it's the most realistic and doable presentation of all. We each were awarded P500 Fish & Co. GCs.

The worst thing about the event though is me forgetting to charge my cam batteries. I ended up missing out on a lot of photo opportunities.

Needless to say, we were also treated to Fish & Co. treats. I actually really loved the fish fillet that's Malaysia-inspired (they have this platter where you can get all 4 flavors, fries and some veggies for P700 I think). It's spicy but not overly so. The India one has curry while the Japan one is wrapped in nori (seaweed wrap?) before being fried.

Since we didn't order any other dish but went straight for the dessert options, I can't really say much about their other offerings. But neighboring bloggers eating their hearts out seem to really enjoy what they ordered.

And mind you, the desserts WERE really treats! I had the hot fudge chocolate cake (P195) and I really loved the presentation, the portion (enough for two!) and the taste (the vanilla ice cream was really creamy and the cake was really moist and rich without being irritatingly sweet). Other desserts like tiramisu and the fruit something were also invitingly presented that it would really be hard to convince yourself that you're not indulging when you order them.

Fish & Co. is true to their word... they do not offer good food, what they offer is a great dining experience!

A Tips and Tricks Blog

I know of so many others who are trying to come up with a blog idea or theme which they hope to monetize someday. I always suggest that they consider a tips and tricks blog, much like this one, or Jsprik's weblog (who's keen on blogging about products and ideas). See, all of us grew up and know little bits of information that have been tried and tested that are also helpful.

I know of a site where visitors are encouraged to submit their own tips... but the traffic generated goes to that site. Might as well post what you know in your own blog, right? Who knows, you may even build on a following.

Start small. Blog about what you really know (money, real estate, weight loss, parenting) and expand on those later (with photography, advertising, etc.). Blog about your passions, or something your mother was passionate and had much to say about. You don't have to cover all the bases but you do have to be credible and cosnsitent.

Trust that if what you write are any good, readers will come.

Mind Your Titles

Hoping a blog entry to generate more traffic for your blog? Just one word can spell a difference of thousands in search engines when you title your entries. So if it's a prime post you're typing up, take the trouble to check your intended title and its various variations first in your search engine of choice. Which generates less competition? Less competition would mean your entry is more likely to come up at the top, you know.

Same wonderful principle if you want to capture niche searches. You can search Google Trends too for inputs as to which topics are regularly searched but are not generating enough material in the web.

And always remember, few ever really search for complete sentences and using correct grammar. Usually, we just type phrases first. So, although you need not title your posts using phrases, you still might want to keep it simple.

Mommy Buttons

Mommy bloggers usually love blinkies and countdown tickers and buttons. And I stumbled on some realy cute buttons for all kinds of infanticipating... even those who adopted or are still dealing with infertility.

So, to grab them, head on over to Miss Jenna's site.

Earn More from Google Ads

I know, earning from Google Adsense isn't really that easy, unless you have a really high-traffic site. But, it is doable.

Two things you can do to boost your earnings include:

1) Placing the ads in a prominent place, like before every blog entry or at the top of your sidebar.

2) Limiting the ad spaces in your blog. Learn from the law of supply and demand, the more space you make available, the lesser the (demand) value will be put in it since advertisers need not compete anymore for that place of honor.

Make the necessary changes now. And 'label' your adsense codes appropriately so you can easily see which ads are generating income and which ones should be 'hidden' already.

cluttered blog?

My friend directed me to a site offering 50 Tips to Unclutter Your Blog. Although we don't have to do everything on the list, I really hope people would take time out to take up some of the tips.

More clutter, more time it takes for your site to load. Some possible readers may not have the patience to wait. Plus, if you really have something to say, you don't want your readers distracted. Of course, I know how difficult it is to walk a fine line between keeping it simple and read-worthy and not being boring and plain.

A personal preference... lose the buttons and blinkies. Some sites I visit have tons of those and they're really of no use because they don't lead you to someplace more interesting. All they say is that you know how to create buttons and blinkies.
