I am starting to support small businesses more and more and I do not just mean the usual cottage industries. I have Mom friends who have turned their advocacy into income-generating endeavors. They sell nursing wear, cloth diapers, earth-friendly soaps, wooden toys, etc.
I also have friends who turned their fashion obsession (and the fact that they now have daughters) into money-making endeavors. They sell and resell clothes, clips, shoes, accessories.
Other friends channel their other talents and go into party planning, or selling crafted toys or decor. Even crocheted stuff is now becoming a more lucrative business idea (one I have not responded to accordingly!).
One way all of them have increased their online presence is through thoughtfully designed blogs and websites which their friends and family can direct their network of friends to. Just share links to sites on FB, supplemented by Instagram and Pinterest postings and maybe one or two blog giveaways and your market has just expanded.
Those looking for webhosting for these might want to check out www.webhostinggeeks.com/wordpresshosting.html for price brackets and package offerings. They may also have to pay for premium photo sharing accounts but the costs are really a small price to pay for the trade it brings. One thing I like about websites having a blog feature is that clients LOVE it when you post pictures they share with you for goods they have bought from you... and that keeps them coming back for more.

Lifetime Income Solutions
One thing my husband and I have agreed on is that we will learn tabout investing this year... and will also start making our money earn, however little or much it is.
But before we could start to compare annuity rates or trade stocks, we both need to start with the basics. And here is a rough guide of how we're doing it:
1) Meet over and agree on a financial plan.
Couples looking to invest need to be aware of their cash flow first so they can see where budget can be slashed (expenses for dining out), which expenses are non-negotioable, and just how (if any) go into savings.
2) Brush up on business Math.
Be clear about the differences of time deposits and stocks and bonds. Re-learn how to compute for interests and dividends. You will need these skills when you finally meet with financial experts.
3) Read and research.
You can buy magazines, read investment books, join investment mailing lists and float questions on the internet. Just do your research. Where are people investing? How are they doing it? What are they doing it for? What is available to you where you are? And how much money and time should you really be alloting for what you plan to do?
4) Meet with experts.
You can consult with agents or financial managers or anyone from the bank.
5) Start slow.
For sure, we will learn as we go and will make a lot of mistakes first. So, best to start slow. As we gain confidence and more knowledge, we can take bigger risks and try smarter.
6) Keep learning.
7) Do not let expenses rise in direct proportion to rising income.
8) Keep investing.
Hopefully... others will have the drive and commitment to do the same. It just won't do to be parents without savings and investments.

Fancy Catalogs Can Help Boost Business
A fancy catalog gives the impression of income, that the business is already established and doing well. So, for those companies that are doing well, it may be a great idea to invest in some stationery, business cards, pamphlets and catalogs (check out zooprinting.com for wholesale catalog printing for an idea of what I am talking about). This is sure to enhance your business image and also add another feeling of professionalis in what you do.
Keep literature/write ups short and sweet. Use positive and action words instead of flowery ones. Either stick to classy and professional... or go really over the top crazy (because middle ground will just confuse prospective clients). Use colors in muted tones. And of course, hire professionals.

All About Baking
I thought I already posted about them. What was formerly known as Chocolate Lovers at the corner of Kitanglad Street and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City is now under new management. I believe they just changed management last August.
The price range is generally the same, with more choices for candies and cupcake liners and an ambience that is brighter and lighter (because it was a little dark there before). They also brought in new products like mixers, edible paper, cookie cutters, molds
Because of the upcoming Holidays, they may be out of stock of some items as some patrons might be panic buying the whole lot... OR they will have a surplus of just about everything, having anticipated that. There may also be slight price increases.

what I mean by lighter (more lights, haha)
a lot of the same products we patronized, just repackaged
good they're selling butter there now too
we bought this and it tasted just like the colorful candies like the one below
... which are really perfect for loot bags (and i'm hoping these are safe compared to the ones you can buy in Divi)
and these are the cupcake/muffin liners

Mapping Financial Freedom with Financial Advisors
Some insurance companies offer financial advisor services, which, if you have the disposable income, might greatly benefit your family. These people will sit with you and your family and, given your particular circumstances (earnings, investments, liabilities) will help you come up with a workable financial plan that you can commit to. What's more, you would have a better understanding of where your money (the one you set aside monthly/annually) goes and how it can work for you. You can even consult with them on mutual funds, best indexed annuities and other things financial.
Managing your finances better, no matter how much you're worth, is sure to give you a better sense of security and truer sense of freedom. Whether you have your own business or is just an employee, you can work out a plan to have retirement savings you can enjoy someday.
So, consider meeting with one, at least.

Cocoon Boutique Hotel: A Truly Green Hotel in Quezon City
The location can't be beat as well. Located at Scout Tobias corner Scout Rallos (streets in this area of Quezon City were named after Boy Scouts who perished on their way to a World Jamboree back in 1963), the boutique hotel is just a few blocks away from the bustling entertainment and food scene that are Tomas Morato, Timog and Mother Ignacia.
Cocoon Boutique Hotel boasts of stylish 5-star amenities with a staff that were extensively trained. Apart from the design of the hotel that maximized natural ventilation and lighting, they also provide a venue for community-immersion for youth with disabilities.
And how is Cocoon Boutique Hotel green? Why, it uses harvested rainwater for toilet flushing, plant irrigation and general cleaning. The building used reclaimed wood and metal from demolished sites and uses 100% LED lighting.
And how is it Filipino? I guess you just have to enjoy the calado woodwork, antiques and paintings in the hotel.
Truly, luxurious cannot be more responsible.
Some of the things you may want to know about the intentional design that went into the hotel include:
It's hard to imagine that they used reclaimed wood for the lobby as well as used lighting fixtures. Notice the skylights for natural lighting.
The use of inverter-type air conditioners make sure that they are non-ozone damaging; notice paintings and woodwork to create an art wall to complement the luxuirous beddings
Water-saving faucets, dual piping for poable and grey water... as well as 100% organic bathroom amentiies (with toilettries made from plasticized cornstarch and packed using stone paper and soy ink).
Entertain, do business, party, celebrate, romance or relax in splendor because Cocoon Boutique Hotel offers a deck bar, coffeshop, ballroom, board room, business center, gift shop, Italian restaurant, tea and pastry shop, a salon, travel agency and aesthetic clinic.

Increasing Profits by Improved Marketing
Sometimes, there are really good products out there that just don't take off because of poor marketing. And while an online marketing degree is sure to help anyone running a business, it would also be good to tap onto present resources that are cheap and risk-free.
Take for example selling things online. Facebook will allow you to put up albums of your wares. Ask your friends' permission to tag them in some of the pictures because they may have friends who may be interested in your products. Or... ask them to promote you in their walls outright.
If your products are for kids, use kiddie doodles in the brochures or fold the flyers up into pinwheels.
If you want to create buzz, get blogger friends to offer your product as prize to their readers.
I am sure an online marketing degree will get you thinking up more ways to market your product better at minimum cost. But don't forget to make do with what you already have since it also usually results in strategies that are more inspired.

UP-PGH Faculty Medical Arts Building (FMAB) Pediatrics
I had gushed about the idea of a pediatric complex offering the services of UP-PGH specialists in one building. I had no idea that it was an even bigger project. The Faculty Medical Arts Building (FMAB) was sitting idle in the PGH compound for over two decades but now, it's offering the latest in medical technology as well as the PGH specialists we all know are the best in the country. FMAB is allowing these doctors to hold private clinics in PGH while also allowing them to be available to PGH patients and UP students.
And I have enjoyed the pediatrics section twice already.
Most of the doctors are officially holding clinic there January 2011 but our pediatrician has already moved in since October. The pediatrics complex has at least eight rooms for the pediatric specialists. Supposedly, once fully occupied, vaccination will be centralized and performed by a tag team of doctor and nurse other than the specialist you're consulting with.
Supposedly, a play area will also be set up just outside the complex, which is in the 2nd floor.

the FMAB lobby, with staff ready to assist first-time visitors and even usher them to where they want to go

Figaro serves coffee near the entrance, this is the cashier area

just after the cashier area is the Radiology center (left) and at the end, the stairs leading to the 2nd floor, the first complex on the right being the Pediatrics one

Inside the pediatrics complex in the FMAB

me, with other parents bringing in their child, to our pedia's FMAB clinic
We actually love the new clinic because well, it's new, clean and the air-conditioning is great (as in bring sweaters or wraps!). However, we do feel it can be a hassle going there because PGH is located in the center of a block, which would require commuters to walk and those driving cars to be stuck in traffic in that area. I am also not sure if parking for FMAB guests is allowed in front of the building (I think that's reserved for the physicians) or they'd have to go park in the main PGH parking area and just walk to FMAB. Plus, for concerned parents, it would really be great to just have all the specialists in one place.
Anyway, I am guessing more chairs will be added to accommodate patients. The complex has its own rest room and there's a separate changing/weighing/measuring room for the kids (with its own sink). All doctors' clinics also has its own sink in the anterooms where the child is examined.
I just hope they installed sound absorbing material there because I can just imagine the noise of so many kids to see so many doctors. Maybe they can also include books in the play area they're going to set up. And at least one TV to broadcast a good children's program to amuse at least half of the kids.
Call 554-8400 or 708-0000 for more information, clinic schedules, specialist availabilities and the like.

Global Pinoy Bazaar - A Review
Global Pinoy Bazaar is a project of Yabang Pinoy where they pool together Pinoy entrepreneurs to exhibit proudly-Philippine made products. It's also a fundraising of sorts (the entrance fee was P100) to help such entreprenurs.
Anyway, the most recent one was held at the Rockwell Tent last November 6-7, 2010. And I must say, I was absolutely impressed. Sure, I didn't see any yakima racks there for bikes but there were local versions of what seems to be Lego-like toys (which uses magnets) and all the clothes were really fabulous! There were sellers of malunggay-based products as well as of chocolates mixed with local produce (siling labuyo, green mango, pili, etc.).
So, the next time there is another Global Pinoy Bazaar, I highly recommend that you go not just to help move local commerce but to also realize that we can indeed be world-class!
My loot consists of three shirts (onesie, toddler shirt and adult shirt) bearing MILKAHOLIC for the men in my life, a mini-bento set from Eden Maternity Wear and a Multi Wrap from Laura's Shawl Couture. Talk about being clothed in happiness!

Scrubs as Business Opportunity
My relatives and friends are going into the hospitality uniforms business by providing fashion seal cotton scrubs sourced and made here in the Philippines to their friends and colleagues abroad.
It started with my uncle who refused to wear the uniform provided at the hospital he was working in and would instead buy a number of white polo shirts here to use as uniform there. Then, scrubs became in fashion. Even dental office uniforms required scrubs. And enterprising Filipinos realized that there was a market for Philippine-made scrubs not only because they are cheaper but the materials are nicer and the designs more beautiful.
So, if you've got friends or family in the caregiving business, don't hesitate to ask if they can sell medical scrubs for you. It could be the great business you're looking for that you can actually do in your own home.

Hero Sausages
Hero Sausages purport to have NO MSG, TVP, Salitre and Food Coloring. They had at least three booths at the World Bazaar and the fat sausages sizzling on hot plates just really can't help but wheth one's appetite. One sausage in a bun cost an average of P80 and it was a very filling meal. The portion size is too big to be called a snack, see.
Hero sausages offer Schublig, Bratwurst, Hungarian and Frankfurters aside from Classic sausages. They also sell these in 500 gram and 1 kilogram packs.
And, Hero Sausages is looking to expand and is giving away free Franchise Kits. Just email herosausages@yahoo.com.ph and indicate the desired area you want to franchise to. Not all of us can afford to invest in orlando hotels anyway, and going into the foodcart business wouldn't require that much resource. All you need to have is some savings and a great location.

Why Go to Bazaars?
Every big Church community, school and village are holding bazaars aside from the really big ones at the World Trade Center and SMX Convention Center. And people may be wondering why other people don't just go to Divisoria or Baclaran... or the malls that are also having Christmas sales.
Goods are not necessarily cheaper indeed in bazaars. Usually, if you have the patience and resourcefulness, you can get the same lovely products at a cheaper price from direct sellers in Dapitan or Quiapo or Divisoria. Since bazaar sellers have to pay for their booths (St. James sellers have to pay P15,000 a day), they really have to charge extra for their wares.
But some bazaar sellers, you can't find anywhere else. A lot of them save and make products only to sell during the Holidays. A lot of them only bake during the Holidays. A lot of them are also homebased entrepreneurs who don't sell on Multiply while others are attached to big industries and this is the only time, and the only way, they sell overruns cheap. So bazaars are still a minefield for new and exciting products you can't get anywhere else.
Plus, other companies are sure to also sponsor and exhibit in bazaars to launch and distribute new products. A Promotional usb drive is just one of the things you can get for free in a bazaar. Some give away sim cards, some give away free products, while some give away coupons or gift certificates. So even if you pay an entrance fee, you don't really lose in a bazzar. At worst, your senses would still have been treated to a feast as you browsed through all the wonderful products being sold.
And if you're keen, you may just walk away with good bargains.

Books, Books, Books
It's super sale once again in all National Bookstore branches so now really is the best time to buy those imported books because saving 10-40% off their prices is always a great thing. They're even giving discounts for school supplies and toys. The sale goes on till September 20.
If that's not enough for you, then there is also the 3rd Manila International Book Fair happening on September 16-20, 2009 (from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM) at Exhibit Halls 1-4, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Plus, the Be Happy author Andrew Matthews will give a talk there on September 18. Chances are, a lot of children's books will be on sale here, even those written and published by local authors.
So save what remains of your salaries and enrich your mind this September. It can even be the perfect time to buy Christmas gifts for nieces and nephews already!
