Blue Water Day Spa Fun Run

Blue Water Day Spa, in its commitment to beauty and wellness is holding its first ever Blue Water Day Spa Fun Run on October 17, 2010 at the Seaside, Mall of Asia.

The Blogger Event
As part of their information campaign, Blue Water Day Spa invited bloggers last September 21, 2010 at Kabisera ng Dencio's at the Fort where they talked about the run and encouraged the bloggers to help create buzz for the event. They discussed what runners can expect as well as the logistics of the event. Made me wish I wasn't preggy and have to miss it, really.

We were encouraged to ask questions about the event, were treated to free dinner and singlets and some of us even got to take home raffle prizes from sponsors. I particularly thank Monterey for the gift certificates I won. Of course, we were also all enamored by Karylle and Boom, celebrity endorsers of the spa who are also joining the run on the 17th.

The BlueWater Day Spa Fun Run Blogger Event at Kabisera was sure fun, with a third of the attendees blogging runners/triathletes!

The Run
The BlueWater Day Spa 'Innovating Wholeness' Fun Run will be held at the grounds of SM Mall of Asia. Starting 4:30 AM, runners will be treated to a guided warm up. The race will officially start for the 10KM runners at 5:00 AM. 5KM and 3KM runners will follow.

Other Perks
First of all, this is a fun run so it's less competitive and more about having a good time while embracing healthier habits. It's perfect for active families and friends.

Then, there are the celebrity runners like Coach Rio dela Cruz, Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez, Boom Labrusca (who will be part of Usapang Lalake in Studio 23), Sam Milby (who's running his first race, join him at the 3KM dash), Fabio Ide, Karylle Tatlonghari (who may be doing the 5KM one) and Daniel Matsunaga.

There will also be the special participation of the likes of Senator Pia Cayetano, Kiko Rustia and Coach Alfrancis Chua. And dare I mention that there will be 40 Brazilian models (not sure if they're all male or a mix of genders) running the 5KM race as well?

Other stars are also expected to join as there will be a stage set up and food will be provided to the runners after.

Exhibitors like BED (Bar, Entertainment, Dining), Fuzion Smoothie Cafe, Citibank, Fruit Magic, Paul Calvin's, Tapa King, Eagle's Wings Enterprise, The Tides Hotel Boracay and Natue Valley among others are also sure to offer special treats to guests and participants. In fact, there will be an area that would seem like a bazaar for the exhibitors and other sponsors that would have stations there.

And yes, participants will be enjoying more treats on the day of the event!
Their site says to expect more surprises from the following:

Timex
Half Moon Asian Cafe
San Miguel Food Corporation – Hungry Juan, Magnolia Chicken Station, Monterey
Business World
Canadian
Gourmet Pao
One Health Club
Fruit Magic
Citibank
Tides Boracay
One Tagaytay
Urban Luxe Facial Center
Hero Sausages
Tapa King
Flap Jacks
Mines View Hotel
Gawad Kalinga Apparel
Phyten

Sponsors include Cath's In Style Fine Jewelry, Canadian Manufacturing, Columbia Sportswear, Beach Hut, Holy Seat, Half Moon Asian Cafe, Monterey, Hungry Juan, Magnolia Chicken Station, Mines View Park Hotel, 55 Eevnts Place and Spa Essentials. Their official bottled water for the event is Aquabest and event partner are Event King Corporation and Mercator Model Management Incorporated. Venue partner, of course, is SM Mall of Asia while media partners include Business World, Business World High Life, Dispatch, Herword.com, Luxe Magazine, Rogue Magazine, RunnerSpeak, Cablelink, Total Fitness Magazine, and Uno Magazine. Registration partners are ResToeRun, Timex and R.O.X.

Jazz Up Your Singlet Contest
Yep, there's more. Participants are encouraged to join the "Jazz Up Your Singlet" contest as part of the BlueWater Day Spa Fun Run. Runners can unleash their creativity by designing their singlets using any material possible (feathers, sequins, paint, etc). The only limitation is that the logo in front and the caption at the back of the singlet should remain untouched, and that the runner should really wear the singlet from start to finish of the race they're participating in. Additional points will be given to those who will use logos of the sponsors as part of their design. Consolation prizes will be given to 100 finalists and contest winners will get free special gift certificates from Blue Water Day Spa. All finalists will also get a chance to strut their designs onstage.

Criteria for judging of the singlets:
Originality of: Design – 25%
Creativity – 25% (use of decoration materials),
Adherance to theme – 15%
Overall Impact – 35%

So as you can see, this particular run may not be free but it does offer so much more in return. Just make sure to get to the place early and park within where SM has jurisdiction to avoid bad elements from messing with your property. Plus, don't bring unnecessary valuables anymore if you're leaving those in the car.

Carbo load the night before and maybe just eat a banana and hydrate before you head onto the race. You can have a proper breakfast later.

Portable toilets will be provided in one area of the grounds, but for preggos like me, it still might not be enough to come. They expect around 5,000 people to turn up so it will still be a major crowd to have to deal with for someone like me who will be 8.5 months pregnant by October 17. Still, the Blue Water Day Spa Fun Run is sure to be a great event for families and friends, even colleagues, to participate in. It's also sure to be a great opportunity for photographers.

Karylle is looking to place so 5KM runners be warned for she really isn't just a pretty face.

Kabisera ng Dencio's

Kabisera ng Dencio's (Bonifacio High Street. Fort Bonifacio Global City 5th Avenue, Fort Bonifacio Global City Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines) is basically a more intimate and cozy Dencio's. It still features the Filipino fare that we all love about Dencio's but at a setting that is more for quiet talks, romantic dates and family gatherings filled with conversations.

It's for meals where you linger and really talk without the sometimes raucuous laughter (not to mention, bothersome cigar smoke) you associate with Dencio's as a haunt for people with drink in mind. Really highly recommended for its ambience, its great food, its friendly waitstaff and nearby parking.

Kabisera ng Dencio's is also perfect for blogger events like the one I attended because the second level can accommodate between 40-60 people nicely. It's also well-ventilated too (should have worn a poncho). I just failed to take pictures of the place since I arrived late and my camera wasn't charged.

Movement Facilitates Growth

Once upon a time, I had a P. E. professor who said that she's the youngest of a brood of ten and also the tallest. She said that was because, since she was the youngest, she was allowed to roam as she pleased because her parents didn't have time to mollycuddle her anymore.

The truth is, movement does facilitate growth which is why one of the best things parents can do for their kids who want, or can't wait, for them to be taller is to get their kids into exercise or sports (of course, some actually inhibit growth, like gymnastics). Kids who grow up active may not even think of ever using a human growth hormone supplement when they grow up since they'd have realized their maximum potential already through regular activity. Plus, human beings are still evolving so having taller kids and grandkids is actually the norm.

It also doesn't have to be rigorous exercise. Parents can just fly kites, throw Frisbees or jog together. Not all families need to be joining triathlons anyhow. Activity saves a child from obesity and depression too.

Poem Scarf by Eden

Bianca Araneta-Elizalde has written a wonderful poem for her children. "My Masterpiece" is then printed on a lightweight knit scarf and can be the perfect, perfect gift for your Mom or wife this Christmas, or to any mom you know.

It's a great accessory, sure to be conversation starters and a fab, fab way to keep you warm in the coming cold months. It can even cover your chest acne (if any), spills on your clothes or double as a breastfeeding cover while you nurse in public.

If you're not into wearing scarves, you can still use this to spice up your bag. Or like what I intend to do, have it framed for your living room (surrounding it with different pictures of your kids) or your baby's nursery.

The Poem Scarf come in 4 colors (Ink, Wine, Denim and Cocoa) and costs P800 each.

Inspirational Stamps and Cool Riddles

If you're looking for inspirational stamps, cool wordarts and riddles/quotes you can use for your layouts, just create with TLC.

The picture stamps are more Americana images but all the other content of this blog are really fun and funny. Creative parents can even use them as games for their kids or as educational tools to prompt reflection and imagination.

A Little Bit of Everything

Parties and reunions have already started. What's more, bazaars, trade fairs and other launches and events occupy our weeknights and weekends.

How do we survive the holidays without needing weight loss supplements after?

Simple really. Drink more water, talk longer and just sample a little bit of everything. Just get one cookie, one small piece of chicken, a teaspoon of stuffing and a sliver of pie. Don't get one whole serving of anything and certainly, do not get two.

This way, you won't really feel deprived because you get to sample everything. And if you really engage in talk (or rapt attention) in between food samples, your brain will register fullness more as you get to smell all the other good stuff without haing to ingest them all.

A little bit of everything. That's the key.

Parentin.TV Talk Series - Review

Suffice it to say that I should have been more than wary of the sponsors for this event. But I really also thought it would be just like most of the baby fairs we go to where sponsors are allotted some time to speak and promote their products. I guess, to them, that is just what they did. But since it's more of a talk supposedly, instead of a fair where attendees really mill around, we were sort of a very captive audience.

THE HIGHLIGHTS
Breastfeeding Talk

Nona Andaya of the Breastfeeding Clinic presented a really greatly summarized breastfeeding talk. She was able to highlight important key points, was very engaging and well, used some really graphic videos. Haha.

Sex Talk
Maribel Dionisio of the Love Institute also gave a really good talk on initiating and handling sex talk with your children, whatever age they may be. She also touched on the importance of communication within the family as a cornerstone of raising kids who are aware of what parents disapprove of and why.

Fashion Show
Let's just say, I salivated and drooled and coveted. There were a lot of maternity wear which will convert to nursing wear after so they'd be really great purchases. The mom models were all fab! It was a pity to be seated so far from the stage.

The Host and the Prizes
Tin-Tin Bersola Babao was very charming. And there were a lot of good prizes raffled off. A 4-month preggy mom went home with a newborn package (stroller, diapers, pillow set) while some moms got P5,000 worth of David's salon gift certificates. I got an Off Lotion loot bag (it wasn't much but it saved me some P200 at least).

THE LOWLIGHTS
Oh... where do I start?

Flyers said we could register online, which I did. Since I thought it was a prestigious event of sorts, I expected a confirmation of our slots. Maybe I'm just used to blogger events but I was concerned by the lack of confirmation so I found others to e-mail at Parentin.TV. I was texted by someone that they really don't send our confirmation e-mails but confirmed our slots.

I don't know how I'm going to word this properly without sounding like an arrogant, uppity person but come the day of the event, my husband and I were surprised with the crowd that greeted us. The topics for the day included cord blood banking and financial security, there was going to be a fashion show of nursing and maternity wear, and it was being held at St. Luke's Global (currently the most expensive hospital in the country, no matter how much they downplay that fact) so naturally we assumed it was going to be attended by mostly A and B crowd. I even dressed up nicely for it. So seeing really rowdy moms in slippers with their own mothers and all their children in tow was kinda a surprise.

Not having enough seats was also annoying. Lack of visibility of ushers for the occasion also didn't help. Tables were scattered with PSBank envelopes so we didn't know which places are still available... and yet, PSBank was also giving the same envelopes at the door. There was just no order nor system with the distribution of say, complimentary eco bags or snacks. There were too many people that the venue ended up being crowded... and kids were playing on the stage area.

Plus, most of the talks turned out to be hard sell opportunities. The most notable thing I got from it is that parents planning to send their kids to DLSU should prepare some P800,000 per sem 17 years from now and that only 16% of Filipinos save. Other than that, it was just one boring, self-serving pitch after another. I was even really disappointed to see the OB-perinatologist (Dra. Valerie Guinto) who performed my CAS doing the sales pitch for St. Luke's Global. No, she didn't extol the virtues of the Lazy Boy and Wifi and flat screen in their birthing room but she did take longer than usual on how St. Luke's is equipped with the latest and the brightest when she was supposed to be tackling obstetrical care.

What's even laughable about the whole thing is that she said it isn't that expensive to give birth at St. Luke's Global while I have it on good authority that one can expect to spend at least P120,000 there for just a normal, uncomplicated delivery.

Plus, I expect only 10-15% of the audience would be able to afford spending that much on a delivery, and not all those who can, will.

The same will echo in all the other talks. PSBank showed the current and projected cost of sending kids to top universities while about half of who attended will just probabaly send their kids to public schools. There was a talk on cord blood banking (P8,000 yearly fee) and insurance and the virtues of brown rice but the disconnect between the topics and the crowd was just too much.

I did use the word laughable already, right?

And I was actually worried for Tin-tin because although the turnout was spectacular, her sponsors might complain that they weren't able to deliver their target market.

Oh and the event started late and just went on forever. I was beat and we didn't finish anymore the last topic. And I may never attend another event like this with Parentin.tv again. In the end, I found it was just not worth my time, eventhough it was free.

Filipino Sign Language - Enrollment at CSB

From September 13-25, enrollment for the next batch of Filipino Sign Language students at the DLS-College of St. Benilde will be held from 10 AM - 5 PM. Just head onto the FSL booth along the hallway at the ground floor near the HRD office.

You can also call526-7441 to 47 local 131 or e-mail balizaj@dls-csb.edu.ph.

Semester will start late September to December. Yes, you may need some anti wrinkle eye cream after finishing the course, with all the squinting and eyebrow-raising you'll be doing as you learn to sign and be expressive but FSL classes are so fun and educational. Plus, the Deaf world is really illuminating.

Jun & Jun's Cebu Lechon & BBQ

Jun & Jun's Cebu Lechon & BBQ is located near St. Luke's Global City at the Fort, between Home Depot and S&R. My husband already told me that they tend to take their time, service-wise, but since it felt like the safest bet for lunch at the time, we still ate there last Saturday (Sept. 11).

The ambience was nice and the place wasn't packed, even at 12 Noon, as most diners head onto other strips in the Fort area. The waitstaff was okay but they were so unhurried and seemed so unconcerned to be considered accommodating. Plus, somewhere along the chain of command, our order of crispy lechon was forgotten. I was already really hungry and we were already halfway through our kangkong and rice when we thought the wait was just ridiculous and followed up the order... only to be told that the cook has forgotten to prepare it.

They did apologize but it was so weird for say, the waiter or the one who took our order (seemingly a manager or person-in-charge at that) to forget. I respect that they must have thought we were on a diet since they only served us rice and kangkong, but we were giving them pointed stares while waiting for the lechon, so they must have at least asked or checked if anything was amiss.

Good thing though that the lechon only took some 5 minutes to be crispy fried.

Unfortunately though, it was just so-so (and really salty, if truth be told). Even my husband (who isn't pregnant) had to really use a lot of vinegar for it. Even the kangkong was just so-so. And yes, I was too annoyed already to take pictures of the lechon.

The one time hubs ate there with his colleagues, he said it took two hours for their order to be brought to them, and 30 minutes into the eating before the lechon was brought to them.

So would I recommend the place? Certainly not, especially considering the price of its fares. Unless you have all the time in the world, maybe. You can have better-tasting lechon from the food carts/kiosks in food courts.

Bio Bita Food Supplement Granules

Way before a time when your young one worries which diet pills are best is the best time to get them in the habit of healthy eating and living.

I make sure I offer only healthy food 90% of the time and insist that he gets enough active time. And now, I have also started my son on probiotics with vitamins by giving him Bio Bita Food Supplement Granules everyday.

Bio Bita Food Supplement Granules tastes like vanilla so I can only mix it with his milk, or some water. He loves scooping it up though so it's become a ritual for us that he likes. People I bought it from says that it helps boost appetite for some kids, but my son's appetite has always been good. But literatureand testimonials i've read on probiotics all attest not just to it'sw regularizing effect on bowel movements but also that it boosts the immune system. Perfect for this time of resistant viruses and aggravated allergies.

Promote good digestion in your child. Give them probiotics. Try Bio Bita Food Supplement Granules if you want. It costs about P425/bottle (which is good for some 25 days use) and less if you get more. Just e-mail marketing@vizcarrapharma.com or call 524-5641 to 42.

Manila International Book Fair is Ongoing

The Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) is ongoing at the SMX Convention Center in MOA. It started yesterday with a lot of discounted books, educational materials and references. It's the perfect sale to buy Christmas gifts to kids from, since they're sure to love storybooks and fairy tale compilations.

You can even get a set of storybooks as unique gifts for a girlfriend, especially if you're able to get something she used to love reading when she was young (say, Little Golden Books). At least they'd be easy read and something she (or you both) can pass onto her future kids someday.

Subscriptions are sure to be discounted there too, so make sure you're armed with enough cash (though some do accept credit cards).

Play Dough

These are the play doughs I have tried. I know I can just as easily make my own but I didn't want to be bothering with food color too. I just make sure that when we do play with the dough, we do so with clean hands and keep to a clean table.

The long and short of it is, you can't really miss with Play Doh. They sell packs of 3 for only P125 but each tub costs about P40. A new one can be quite sticky though so my hubby doesn't like playing with a fresh tub. It's easy to soften up too, both an upside (when you forgot to put it back in its tub and it got dry) and a downside (because you might not know just how much water to add to soften it up).

Play Doh also has so many mold sets to choose from (albeit, a little on the expensive side). A niece has the ice cream factory one. I am actually dreaming of buying that one with the table container just so my son will have a designated table for his play dough time and a container for all the molds and accessories. But the sets are quite expensive and if you have a lot of dough already, you don't really need all the dough that come with the sets. But in terms of color choices, Play Doh really offers variety.

The Art Academy play dough are actually more expensive. A separate pack of just dough makes each tub cost around P60. But we got ours with my son's Farmer and Friends Dough Kit. You have to really add water to it and it can stain your hand, but once properly moldable, I think it's better than Play Doh for dough models you want to be upright. It holds its form better, so to speak.

The Universe of Imagination play dough is my favorite of the three. It's not too soft like Play Doh and holds its form well like Art Academy's. If it ever toughens up, it only requires a few drops of water to make it malleable enough again. Colors are limited though (i've only found red, blue, yellow, white, pink, and green) but each tub only costs around P30 each.

One other thing going for Art Academy and Universe of Imagination play dough is that their tubs/containers have molds for animals.

The small white tubs of dough in the first pic are dough from sets bought from Anding's Toy Store. I am not sure if they're non-toxic as am sure these three are (and other brands too, like Crayola) so I don't recommend them for use with really young children who are still likely to taste or lick their dough.

Play dough is great for developing your child's hand dexterity as well as his imagination. It even relaxes parents. Thus, it's a toy I really highly recommend that all parents provide for their kids (and in our case, for Mommy too).

Play Dough Sets and Molds from Divisoria

Anding's Toy Store in Divisoria also sells really affordable play dough sets and molds. I usually go there to buy these sets but do not let my son use the play dough that comes with it (because I would rather stick with branded ones that I know are non-toxic since my son still has a tendency to go licking). For older kids without sensitive skin though, I think the play dough being sold at Anding's are good enough.

Those in boxes cost P125 while the molds in the plastic container cost P25

The boxed set will provide you with 8 pots of differently-colored play dough, 4 molds and some cutters and also a guide for making patterns

Contents from the set from the plastic container (these are from 3 sets 'coz some molds were not available in the others and I wanted as many dinosaur molds as I can get)

Except for the Play Doh basic set (with the extruders), the other molds in this picture were also bought from Anding's

Anding's also sells play dough in small pails. There are also other molds being sold there, like the one from Play Doh (with extruders) but I wouldn't recommend the crank-style one from Anding's as it breaks easily.

The molds from the boxed set are pretty good though and very flexible and fun :)

The 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River is set on October 10, 2010. This race is organized by the Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig. KBPIP is a river rehabilitation project of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, local government units and agencies, non-government organizations, private corporations, and the public.

The race aims to bring together 120,000 runners. What makes it more exciting is it aims to beat an existing Guinness World Record for the largest foot race in the world. The current holder is the San Francisco Bay Breakers with 110,000 runners.

The goal of the fun run is still for the rehabilitation of the Pasig River and its tributaries. Registration is P250 for all the run categories. The committee did a school caravan to encourage the students to sign up. Registration will also be possible at Bench Stores and at the ROX (Recreational Outdoor eXchange) store at Bonifacio High Street (they will announce on FB on when registration in this two will open).

The 120,000 target looks within reach. From our side though, we’d still need volunteers to ensure that the logistics process will be efficient too since it’s an important part of the event.

Our company, CTSI Logistics, is the Official Logistics Partner of the event. Our role is to handle the baggage deposit and retrieval areas. This means we are to receive, tag, store the bags from the start areas, transport them to the finish area at MOA and distribute them to the rightful owners. The expected number of bags which will be deposited is close to 70,000 and based on our simulations and projections, we’ll need 500-600 people to man our booths and counters.

Aside from the sheer number of participants, the difference here is that the race will have 3 start areas (MOA grounds for 3K, CCP grounds for 5K and in front of Manila Peninsula for 10K) instead of the usual starting area at one place. This is where the challenge lies for the race organizers and for us who is tasked to handle the logistics process.

We’re down to the last 50 days of preparations and we’re hoping more people will sign up either as runners or as volunteers for the race.

The race also has a Facebook page you guys might want to check out!!!

So come on guys, run for Pasig River or donate your time and energy to helping other people run by volunteering at CTSI!

Make Wipes and Alcohol Your Friend

Wouldn't it be nice if radar detectors can also detect germs and viruses?

But since they can't, you'd have to do all the detecting and preempting yourself. If you're making a trip to a public place (like the mall), make baby wipes and rubbing alcohol your friend. Before sitting down with your child to dine, wipe the surfaces again, even after it's been cleaned by the crew. Insist on your kids not touching the railings, walls, etc. that could have been touched by somebody sick. Insist on washing your child's hands before eating, or any chance you get. And definitely, do not allow them to put their hands in their mouths.

Adults and kids alike are coming down with the flu right now. Hospitals are even full of sick people that some have to be confined and stay in the E.R. Constant vigilance is therefore necessary so you won't br bringing germs to your home.

Nestle Ice Cream - Baby Ruth and Crunch

I'm not sure if these are new flavors, revamped ones or seasonal ones. Still, groceries are stocking them right now. We first tried the Baby Ruth and it was real chocolatey... enough that you need not eat a pintful to feel sated. It could prove really sweet and rich though.

I found the Crunch one better. It had the same chocolate ice cream as the Baby Ruth and it also had Crunch bits which weren't that sweet. They sort of made the ice cream less sweet.

It's the perfect ice cream to buy for sharing at work, served in cones, since people will be less inclined to really binge on it. Savings for you!!!

Steam Inhalation with Your Baby

How can you continue checking out job opportunities at www.consonus.com if you've got a colds-annoyed baby? And it's not just the cold virus making the rounds, allergic rhinitis has also led many parents to bring their children to the doctor.

Colds usually need not be medicated. As one pediatrician I talked to said, over-the-counter medications are actually Mommy medicines, because they're more for the mothers so they'd feel they're doing something but doesn't really do anything for the colds, which will resolve on its own (unless a child's immune system is so compromised that it results in complications, like infected sinuses).

Usually, saline nasal drops are your friend during this time. Steam inhalation too (nebulizing is for the lungs, not for stuffy noses). But how does one do it safely with an infant?

Here are some ways you can try:

1) A steaming basin of water placed some distance from you (to prevent you or the child disturbing the basin), with you sitting on a cushion (which will absorb any hot water should it spill and give you time to get away) with a big, light blanket covering you and the basin.

2) Using a water heater, basin in the sink with you holding the baby near the sink but not over the basin, with a light blanket to keep the steam in.

3) Using a water heater in a pail or basin in the bathroom, with you and the baby in the tub or just sitting near it, with the bathroom door closed (to create a sauna effect).

Or yes, you can just use a humidifier too. But steaming really works for us as it decongests our noses very effectively. :)

Eden Maternity Collection by Bianca Araneta

One of the highlights of Mom's Purest Love at Eastwood City Mall was the launch of Bianca Araneta Elizalde's Eden Maternity Wear which were also designed to double as nursing wear after. In fact, they're very classy enough for even non-pregnant women because they help hide or highlight bulges and are really seem to be made from very breathable fabric (a must for preggos and breastfeeding moms!).

I did not manage to take great pictures because I am pregnant and waddling and sitting in the sidelines, but have a look at how must-have the outfits are! A lot of them can be worn in different ways, with the finale piece being the most versatile of the lot.

multi-way top starts here

love the way this top was worn here

Hopefully, I can find out soon where the collection will be available. The collection is available at Eden Maternity

Andok's Bibingka

Andok's Roasted Chicken has truly expanded and evolved. They now also sell bibingka.

Bibingka is one of our many rice cakes that is most sought after during Christmas season. I actually don't eat it myself, just because, but hubby loves the stuff. And he loved the bibingka offered by Andok's very much, enough to insist I try it because if I didn't, I'd be missing half of my life. I still didn't try it but he said it was just really a perfect fluffiness of comfort and the best he's tried from different restos and kiosks. And because he's really not easy to please food-wise, I believe him.

So, if you have balikbayan relatives you want to be impressing, just buy some of these stuff. It only costs P49.It's served/sold with the usual coconut shavings and muscovado sugar. Unfortunately, not all Andok's branches sell them. Hubby buys his from the branch near Waltermart in Makati.

Aquaknox Restaurant

Aquaknox Restaurant is located at San Lorenzo Village in Makati, very near Don Bosco Church Makati (2 restaurants away) and also quite near Makati Cinema Square (Plaza Fair). The ambience was cozy and was the perfect venue for Johnson & Johnson's Bedtime Believer Awards (in collaboration with Nuffnang).

I was not in the mood to really take pictures so I can only offer a shot of the lunch I ate (and I have since forgotten the name of the dish). But it was nice. Their sandwiches were also good and the waitstaff was attentive and thorough.

I highly recommend the place for similar small events (well, it can actually accommodate up to a hundred people, but the place is a split-level type so some would have to sit upstairs) and gatherings.

Bring Light To Your Home

What one trick can you do with your curtains to let more light into your living spaces? Try framing your windows with them instead of just providing some shade. Place them in slightly longer curtain rods than your windows so you can draw them further and maximize light streaming from your window.

You can also opt to buy discount shades that's almost sheer so that light can still seep in even when they're drawn.

One other you can do is to install sliding windows on walls (made from the same material or not) separating certain rooms, which you can open during the day.

All-Natural Deodorant from Human Heart Nature

Human Heart Nature has produced an all-natural deodorant that also aims to soften and lighten skin!

Buy direct or from consignees like One Planet Noah. Here's part of their ad blurb :)

For the first time ever, you can now
break free from bad chemicals & body odor with our
100% Natural Deodorant with Rosemary & Sunflower Oil
For softer, lighter skin

Only Php79.75 (50ml)!

Triclosan-free • Paraben-free • Parfum-free • Glycol-free • Alcohol-free • Aluminum-free

FINALLY! The long wait is over! For the first time ever, an ALL NATURAL deodorant that’s sure to combat body odor and keep your underarms light with its non-darkening formula.

Human Nature has come up with a natural alternative to keep you fresh and clean all day with the latest addition to our product line up. Not everyone may know this, but sweat is generally odourless. It is only when bacteria on the skin start to break down the sweat and mix with it that it starts to produce an offensive body odor. Because one’s underarms are moist and warm, it then becomes the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. To combat this, Human Nature dove deep down (to the seas) in order to find a natural anti-bacterial alternative to the common chemical ingredient alcohol, found in all commercial deodorants, and discovered the wonders of Chitosan.

Alcohol in traditional deodorants can cause underarms to darken. Chitosan has no such side-effects! It is 100% naturally derived from the shells of sea crustaceans. It is an anti-bacterial active that is biocompatible, non-toxic and biodegradable. Chitosan has been clinically proven to promote wound healing while also being anti-itching, anti-microbial and an excellent skin moisturizer. And because Human Nature is all about everything natural, we do not recommend using any anti-perspirant actives such as aluminum salts, which has been linked to breast cancer, because it is un-natural to block pores and prevent one’s underarms from sweating. Aside from breast cancer, aluminium salts have also been linked to reproductive system toxicity and neurotoxicity.

Now available at Metro Manila branches! Order now!

Avoid First Batches of Gadgets

The latest gadget to hve created such a buzz that I know of is the iPad. But just like in any other gadgets, the first batch sold and distributed had problems that the following batches didn't have. Techies would often advice you to avoid such batches because this is often the case. It's just like a major pilot-testing going on.

Recently, the iPhone also got such flak and lucky are the ones with iphone warranty who can have their units replaced in one of the biggest gadget recall.

I know there's usually a rush to own the latest gadget but let others test them first. You may get bragging rights with your purchase but you also usually end up dealing with hassles that aren't worth it in the long run. Patience is a virtue with new gadgets, so remember that!

Mind Toys' Age Guidelines

As a parent, we often buy toys sometimes because we had one, wanted one, or just want one. We also buy some toys for our kids thinking it's cool, cute, or that our child is sure to enjoy it. Some, on the other hand, buy the most expensive they can find, or the most educational they can see.

Few really care about the age guideline usually stamped on the box. I know I seldom did. It was just a minor consideration, if at all. But the longer I become a Mom, the more I also realie that such age guidelines do serve a purpose.

First, there is of course the safety issue. Toys with small parts will not be appropriate for kids three years and below as it may pose a choking hazard, as toddlers are still far too curious to follow reminders. Toys with sharp or hard edges are also not really appropriate for infants yet.

Then there is the kind of play the toy was made for. Stacking cups or blocks are okay for a vast age range but say, electronic toys are likely to just be banged and thrown by kids two years and below. Before they can really appreciate what each button is for, the toy is already banged up so much that it's broken. Then there are miniature toys that will be fragile for pre-schoolers who still don't have much self-control.

But the most important thing is this: toys are meant for play that's meant for the child to have fun and learn. So the toys you should buy should be age-appropriate for your child to actually manage it and be succesful playing with it. As much as visual, electronic toys entertain, they also limit a child's imagination if given too early. Toddlers and pre-schoolers need more of toys they can mix and match, and throw and taste and build from.

So, next time you're about to make an impulsive buy, mind the age guideline and really think: what do I want this toy to accomplish for my child?

Screened Porch Uses

As I was sweating profusely during the blackout, I told my husband that my ideal home would have a screened porch so that on nights like that one, or during stormy nights when it's really cold (I love the rain), we could camp there instead and still feel safe. A garden employing hydroponic systems will make it more inviting probably, but that will just be an added bonus.

A screened porch can indeed be an extra bedroom for any family. It's also a great living room extension for receiving guests and hanging out, as well as a perfect play area for kids as it gives the illusion of being outside. Filipinos especially love the sun, even if we should minimize our sun exposure, so lounging in a screened verandah can already provide us with that energy boost only the sun can give, without actually being outside. Plus, a screened porch will give you an activity area that can utilize natural light. That is savings on power for you.

Hypoallergenic Soaps

As I was drafting my allergy article, I just realized that there are so many hypoallergenic soaps that newborns or people with sensitive skin can use. And these soaps aren't necessarily that expensive or hard to find. Dove White, for example, can be found in grocery shelves as well as drug stores. Use of these soaps can also be one of the best acne treatments there is since they won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Because they are gentle too, you can use them more times in the day.

Check out your local drug store for trusted and handy brands. Check out message boards or referrals and organic, local products. There are so many to choose from. The gentler the scent, the gentler the soap is sure to be. And yes, ask moms what they use for their newborns. After all, even if our faces (and skin) do so much for us during the day, it still really needs utmost care like the one we give to wee babes.

Snorers, Lose Weight!

Do you snore really loudly? Are you overweight? Then here's another reason for you to suddenly want some quick weight loss: deviated airways.

My father in law has just undergone a quadruple bypass operation. He was only scheduled for a triple bypass but the doctors found that there are four main arteries that are blocked. But the operation almost got postponed because they couldn't fit certain tubes up his nose and through his throat due to fats and deviated airways. The usual tubes couldn't fit and his airways were irregularly shaped. His pulmonologist didn't suspect this even after hearing him snore.

So yes, snoring could even be a sign that surgeries may be more of a challenge in the future, aside from the usual rheumatic heart disease and oxygen deprivation to the brain that are associated with it. So lose weight, snorers. And if you're undergoing major surgeries, already discuss the possibility that your airways may have irregularities.

Ineng's Barbecue

Ineng's Barbecue has been around for close to a decade now but I have only tried their barbecue last month, at the death anniversary of my husband's maternal grandpa.

I normally don't eat barbecue but I ate three sticks of Ineng's! I found it really delicious and the fatty parts at the end of each stick reminded me of sweet tocino. If one wouldn't dare eat those parts, I guess they can collect it (before everybody eats them) and chop them up with fried rice. Yummy!!!

Ineng's also offers affordable meals which almost makes me feel pity for those who live and work near their 11 branches. These pork sticks must require an ab workout after because you're not likely to just eat just two sticks. It's really seldom I find meat I can eat without needing rice to go with it.

So go contact them now for your food orders:

Every Other Day Diet

Instead of chugging diet pills, why not try first the EVERY OTHER DAY DIET? Basically, it's a kind of diet where you eat as usual on some days and go on diet (say, strict calorie count and less carbs) on others. For some peole, this works better than going on a diet day in and day out. Because you know you can eat whatever you want the following day anyway, sacrificing today isn't so hard, maybe even welcome. Of course, it doesn't mean you should go binge on the days you're not dieting, but at least you need not deprive yourself of your usual favorite dishes and desserts.

Many swear by this diet and they were able to show results in weight loss just the same. Plus, this allows for a more gradual shift to healthy eating, grooming you to actually like and look foreward to the salads and fish and fruits.

Combine this with portion control and healthier alternatives during non-diet days and am sure, calorie control will be easier.
